Photographer Spotlight - Darren Johnson
Darren Johnson is an All Events Photographer based in London, UK. I started following Darren on Twitter a while ago, and was very excited when he contacted me about doing an interview for the photographer spotlight series. Darren does amazing photography; he manages to capture life and people living it in such away that it makes you feel like you’re right there with his subjects. I was in such awe of his work in fact, that when I asked if he would like to include some photographs along with the interview, he said yes and asked me if there were any specific ones that I wanted to include. I said no, that I couldn’t choose and that I wanted him to choose some of his favorites. I then started looking through his website again however, and ended up emailing him THREE different times with specific pictures I wanted to include. I just kept finding new ones I LOVED. Sorry, Darren, to be such a pain, but thanks for putting up with me!
So, without further ado, I am excited to introduce to you Darren Johnson. I think you will become an instant fan like me!
Name: Darren Johnson | iDJ Photography
What type(s) of photography are currently doing?
I cover a wide range of shoots and events from Weddings to protests to photoshoots to animals.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography to me is a way of life, I'm constantly looking/sizing up a potential shot. I seem to have an extra layer to my vision even when not shooting. Always searching.
How did you get started in photography?
I started off with a part time course in beginners/intermediate film/dark room photography. This helped me gain an understanding of the foundations to the art and appreciation to the time it take to perfect your work compared to the digital format. After the course, I conveniently had a holiday planned to Jamaica and the camera and I had a great time!
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
A photographer called Pretty Puke. Very alternative, most of his ideas are wonderfully strange and hugely controversial.
What is your favorite thing to photograph?
My favourite thing to shoot are protests/demonstrations as they can be unpredictable but most appealing thing for me is capturing the raw emotion and passion that some of the protesters show.
